Unit X: Tutorial
Wednesday 3rd May 2016
During the tutorial we spoke with Annabelle, a film-maker,
about our ideas so far and what we have planned for the installation. Jenny is
our usual tutor; this was an opportunity to get another opinion on our work and
share new ideas. Sam, Georgianna and I attended this meeting.
We spoke about our installation and how we were going to
create it; we discussed the problems of weight and presentation. We had to ensure
the weight capacity of the ceiling and the wooden frame we designed, and how
that would look altogether. Annabelle believed that the structure would look ‘stunning’
if done correctly, this would mean all of the items and sting to be uniform
with each other to capture a moment in time and space. The items hung would have
to be weighted if they too light such as paper; to ensure the fishing line is
straight. This is demonstrated in the test where I hung paper from the clothes
line with fishing line. The line coils because the paper is too light; we will
have to discuss a solution in the group.
Materials were another topic brought up during the meeting.
We spoke about the materials we had chosen to create the installation
including: chicken mesh and fishing line. We would hang items from the fishing
line, and use the chicken mush around the structure.
We also discussed about the addition of sound which would
add an atmospheric element to the space. We had spoken about this idea initially
at the start of the project but was brought up again during this meeting. By
using speakers within the room we could play old recording inspired by world
war one environments such as battlefields, rifle fire and cavalry. We will have
to discuss the details of the sound element, however we believe it is an
effective one which we intend to add to the space.
Plan B was an important topic we discussed to act as a
backup plan in-case our intended idea does not turn out the way we want it. This
involved the shadow effects created by the light in the centre of the structure
which would cast shadows around the space. However if the shadows do not cast
properly, we discussed a plan B where the lights would be placed in the corners
of the room illuminating the structure from the outside.
Another idea we discussed was incorporating the audience as
part of the installation, this would be done through cameras and screens. The
camera would record the movements of the audience around the space and would
show a perspective from the camera as a composition because the audience would
be the element of movement.
Overall we highlighted the practical problems around our
idea and how we would solve them. It was a shame that not all of the group were
able to attend, however we have planned future meetings to catch up with what
we’ve discussed and were in constant communication with updates and ideas.
