This morning I had a doctor’s appointment; therefore I could
not be at the London Scottish House as early as I have been. As soon as I had finished
there I went to the space to find Sam and Jake were there adding stuffing from
the bear onto the structure.
I went straight to work by adding additional items
such as paper and planks to the structure to fill in any gaps. We decided it
would be best to have the stuffing of the bear located where the limbs and head
were rather than spread out as this made the structure look ‘Christmas-y’ which
is not what we wanted. By limiting the spread of the stuffing and stretching it
from the limb it has created the effect of movement as this teddy bear is torn
apart by the force of the tornado.
After some time Georgianna and Eve arrived and worked on
hanging more objects and spraying the remaining foam blocks. We also decided to
spray the planes silver as their colour were too bold to incorporate with the
structure. By spraying them silver it allows the planes to blend with the structure
as well as weathering the planes to the point where wings are broken. This was
cause by the paint however this has created an aged affect which supports our
structure which is a great result. We continue to experiment with objects and items
to achieve the unexpected and best results.
Today we have had trouble regarding the lighting and sound. We
intended the lights shine from above and the exterior of the structure to cast
a number of dynamic shadows and illustrate movement within our work; however
this has been a challenge. This is due to the AV store refusing to lend us
lights based upon the excuse “the bulbs will blow”. This is a rather vague and
confusing reason as we would be using the lights as any other lights which
should function normally. Meaning we could not rent lights from the AV store;
using our initiate we decided to go into town and purchase lights ourselves. We
had the assistance from a clerk who helped us with the best bulbs for the lamps
we had bought and allowed us to test this within store. This way we could see
the results before purchasing the lamps, the results were great and I purchased
two in case we needed another.
Despite these lamps being brand new, we had to have them PAT
tested as they are not from the AV store. After returning to the Av store to
ask if they would PAT test the lamps there were no electricians on site; they
gave us a number to call the company directly. Georgianna tried to call them however
there lines were busy and she left a message to call her back. This would not
be quick enough to be tested before tomorrow evening as this would be when the
show begins. Because we were determined to have our lights used in the show: Georgianna,
Sam and I have gone out of our way to speak with our accommodations to see if
there were electricians on site or on call. My accommodation had contacted two
electricians who both agreed that the lamps would not need PAT testing as it is
a new product. Therefore the electricians forwarded legal documents for us to
show our tutors tomorrow to allow us to have the lights as part of our
installation.
Overall today has been stressful because I have had to rush
around and use my own initiative to keep myself busy. Even when there are
moments where work needed is not completely clear, I used the time to clean the
space as we would have to before tomorrow evening. In addition I have had to
rush from the shopping centre and university to buy lamps and not be able to
have them tested. I am disappointed that elements have not gone to plan today;
this was anticipated yet it is still frustrating. However I believe I handled these
situations well as I continued to work rather than give up all together. This
allows the project to move forward and allow the team to be successful
together. We intend for the whole installation to be ready for tomorrow
evening, we plan to finish earlier than this as this allows time to clean up
the space. We will then plan times where people will invigilate the space on
which days; this involves anticipating and managing team member’s time tables
which will be a challenge.
