Unit X: Install DAY 1

Unit X draws to a close as we reach the week of installation. Over the next three days all of the groups will be installing their pieces within the space ready for the viewing on Thursday. As our project is a structure, all of our work lies within the construction over these next few days. We will record our progress and record challenges we face and how we solve them.
We had discussed the time we’d meet this morning for the ladder training (this was mandatory otherwise we could not use the ladders on site). I was the first on site with the wooden planks, two books and scrap paper just in case we don’t have enough. Shortly after Georgianna, Sam, Lucy, then Eve with all of the required materials.

As mentioned in previous posts and throughout development we planned to place a wooden support above the steel frame of the ceiling which would suspend the structure, Sam had cut the planks and drilled holes for the screws to create the frame. When we arrived we found a sign that said we could not remove the foam tiles from the ceiling, this meant we could not place the wooden support above the steel frame and we had to figure out another way to support the whole structure. After discussing ideas we experimented with hooks that were provided for blacking out the windows; we planned to hang the support from the steel frame (without removing the foam boards) which would then suspend the structure. However this posed problems because of the positioning of the steel frame of the ceiling to the lengths of the wooden planks; this meant that the hooks did not align with the frame correctly and caused the support to become uneven.

We tried again this time using the fishing line from the steel frame of the ceiling to suspend the support; however this posed the same problem as the hook because the support was uneven and was very challenging to ensure every corner was exactly level as well as strong enough to support the weight. Finally a solution was found as I was at my CP tutorial where the support is suspended from hooks from above the ceiling; connected to a metal frame above the foam tiles and fishing lines ensure the support is level and strong.

During this time to ensure progress was made, Georgianna and Lucy took the time to cut the chicken mesh into the donut shapes needed which we would hang the objects from. Eve went to Boots to collect the photographs which would be hung from the chicken mesh. We found that we will need more scissors, another set of ladders and potentially more items. We discussed this before we left and will maintain communication through installation; this way we can solve problems and work as an effective team.

Overall today has posed a number of challenges which we had faced as a team and solved together, we remained efficient as members completed tasks individually despite this. As we had manged the team and our time, we can now proceed rather effectively as the remaining tasks are rather simple compared to the tasks today.
