CV Improvement: One to One Tutorial
Friday 6th May 2016
As part of the professional employability unit, we had to
produce a CV suitable for the creative industries. To further my personal
development, I attended a CV workshop where staff from the Employability Hub at
MMU’s Business School will read your CV and give feedback and constructive
criticism. This provided a second opinion on my CV from a professional, who
would give me honest and constructive feedback.
Reading through my CV there were a few instances where I was
too modest, this is because I would use the word ‘basic’ when I didn’t need to.
I find this difficult when I write about myself as I am a modest person and
find it uncomfortable to ‘sell’ myself. However this is what needs to be done
as part of a CV, therefore I removed words and re-constructed sentences; that
they flow better and are not too modest.
Another common mistake I had missed was in the education
section, I had an apostrophe where I didn’t need one. GCSEs does not need an
apostrophe between the ‘E’ and ‘s’.
As for the interests section, there was too much text which
discourages employers to read it. This relates to presentation because a large
block of text is not an effective way to present a CV; therefore I would break
the text apart by being concise and using the space effectively. This way my CV
and the text would be appealing for the employer to read.
Overall they said the presentation of my CV was great with
creative aspects as well as the content. I would just have to improve those
points made during the meeting. I will continue to update my CVs design and
content and ensure there aren’t future mistakes.
