Sound Design: Task 1

Production

22nd January 2017

The task requires us to produce a short audio piece which portrays a narrative through the audio only. Narrative driven dialogue is forbidden; we have to rely on the sound affects we collect.
Over the past few days I have been collecting sounds using an app on my phone to record many different sounds. These sounds can be used for this task, or can be kept for a later purpose. Using everyday objects, I recorded several different sounds. From this I discovered that recorded sounds don’t always sound the way you would expect; that listening back to the audio alone appears to have different origins.
I decided to collect sounds first, to then be inspired by the sounds to create a short yet simple narrative. From my sounds I thought about iconic sounds which are recognisable by most people and could be portrayed in order to create a narrative. From this I thought about a holiday; the distinct differences between spaces and the sounds they bring. This narrative would have three distinct locations: Home, Airport, and Destination. These all have different and distinct sounds associated with them; once played in a certain order can portray a narrative.

I collected assets online as well as using my own sounds because some sounds I cannot collect myself. I collected assets from Youtube and Soundbible; which are royalty/copyright free.
I complied the clips together in Adobe Premiere, this way I can see a clear timeline of the audio, add simple effects and export as an mp3.

This has been an interesting experience, as I have never done anything like this before with audio alone. This has made me consider the possibilities and the importance of audio which can be incorporated in my future works.
