11 Second Club February 2017: Keys and Solid Drawing

11 Second Club

12th February 2017

Solid Drawings

Continuing with the challenge, I have now keyed my character’s positions, these are the key and the extreme positions so far. I have considered the principle of solid drawing within these poses to ensure they are clear as possible to the audience.

I created a locked camera to keep as reference for the audience’s view.  This way I know which way the character is looking and where it should be posed.

I considered the silhouette of the character ensuring the pose is clear to the audience of the character’s intent. I tried to keep the poses diverse, that no two positions are identical; making every one of them unique.
In addition I considered the line of action in each of the poses to make the poses natural and fluid.
This is a video of the poses so far.

I will continue work on this project, moving onto the passes of the limbs, head, neck etc. Ensuring all of the passes are effective.

Sound Design Workshop: Music

Music within Animation

8th February 2017

Within this workshop we discussed the use of music within animation. What effect does it have on the audience, is it suitable for the given animation? I took notes throughout the workshop as seen below:

Nuke Workshop: Viral Advert Introduction

New Assignment: Viral Advert

9th February 2017

After the hand of the teaser trailer, within this workshop we were introduced to our new assignment. We must create a viral advert lasting at least 15 seconds in length. From what we have learnt about Nuke during the first assignment, we must apply this knowledge to the viral advert.
This advert must promote the animation course; the full details regarding the assignment can be found on the brief.
We have been advised to create these adverts within a group. As the work will be demining and to effectively produce an advert we will have to distribute the work between our group. I have taken notes throughout the workshop, as seen below.

We have assembled a group with: Siobhan Gilmore, Daniel Nield and Daniel Marsden.

We have decided to plan our ideas to ask Damien, our tutor, about the possibilities and limitations of our ideas.

11 Second Club February 2017: Post 1

This month’s challenge is:

With continued revision on animating I started by listening to the audio repeatedly, to understand the actor’s emotions, tones and the subject of the dialogue. From it I understood that the man had removed glass from something, my first thought would be glasses. Another idea I had would be a window would have been removed causing rain to get in.

The subject of the dialogue is that the man has removed glass believing it is a good idea and the woman in the dialogue doesn’t agree.
I have begun with just the male character, because I can focus on one character at a time. I will recreate a character of self-contempt who believes he is clever in his choice; making him arrogant.
I started with sketches of the keys of the shot, how that character would change from pose to pose; the significant ‘stages’ within the dialogue:

 Talk
Interruption  Acknowledgement (Point)   Explanation (removal)     Explanation 2 (reveal of no lens)  Put back on  'Ta-da'

After I had completed the sketches I had posed the Malcolm V2 model in Maya, timing the poses to the imported dialogue. This way I can visualise and time the movements and the staging of the character.

I will continue to work on this project, I will move onto properly posing the character to a directional camera.

Animation Development Workshop: 3

Animation Development Workshop

1st February 2017

Steve discussed the importance of staying up-to-date within the animation industry, what is popular at the moment, company’s desires and animation events. After this Steve went around the room to see everyone’s progress on their pitch bibles.

I had not produced any visual concepts for my pitch at that moment in time, therefore Steve wanted to see work next session. Over this time I have been producing sketches from what I have been writing including characters and turnarounds.

As seen in the notes below I was sketching ideas from what I was typing.

Nuke Workshop: Writing

Writing Files In Nuke

2nd February 2017

Within this workshop we learnt how to ‘write’ a composition which essentially exports the file as an image sequence or video. I had already learnt this in my own time figuring out how to work Nuke. However within this lesson I learnt about compression. I had exported my files as ‘movs’ which are video files; which I believed would be easier to edit in Premiere. Damien explained that Nuke is a poor compressor of data causing our work to lose detail and quality.

Within post production, quality is everything as this is the stage where the product is on its way to completion. Especially in visual effects where the effects need to appear to exist in the real world; even if the audience know it isn’t real. The solution to anti-compression is to export files as images to maintain the fullest quality. This can then be imported into premiere as an image sequence, still a video but without the loss of quality.

Therefore I learnt that an export of a mov file may be needed for quick response or reflection between a client, a quick and easy way to export and send compressed files. However for final production where quality is of the upmost importance, an image sequence is necessary.

After this workshop I will have to return to my own work, export them all as image sequences and import these new assets into Premiere for the final video.

Foley Sound Workshop: The Shed

 Recording Foley Sound

1st February 2017

We were introduced to the sound studio within ‘The Shed’. This is a soundproof room specifically designed for recording sounds without interference of other elements. This is a perfect space for the collection of Foley sounds. We were shown the space and took part in some recording ourselves using items on ourselves at the time such as in our pockets and bags.
In this time I learnt to experiment with any object and to really think outside the box about sounds. Recording Foley sound you may intend to record one sound and produce another; but to embrace this work flow.

I will book this room in the near future; using objects in unconventional ways to produce interesting and original sounds. These sounds will be mixed together to produce a short story.
