Animation Screening: 21st January 2016
Introduction
Within this screening we were shown the film: 'Mary and Max' by Adam Elliot which is based upon a true story.
We were shown a few videos of Adam Elliot about his early work and an interview with him about the making of Mary and Max. His work often involves people who are considered mentally ill or impaired such as people with: Tourette's syndrome or Asperger's syndrome etc. As he explained in his interview he felt that as a child he was drawn to these children who were discriminated and bullied for their impairments. He wishes to show their lives through his films and to make the audience understand and empathise with people who are less fortunate.
This film is a stop motion film with a very unique style.
Film
The film was about how two different people on different ends of the world become friends. The film focuses on the problems these characters have with their lives and how they are mentally impaired. There are other characters too with different impairments such as Agoraphobia, Tourettes etc. They used sepetrate colour apllets to portray the different worlds in which they lived in. Mary had an orange tone from Australian suberbs whereas Max was black and white being from the city of New York.
"A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York."

Conclusion
I really enjoyed this film for a number of reasons. I appreciate the message behind this film and that I felt empathetic towards the characters in it. I feel that the stop motion was amazing and that it was the perfect medium to tell this story. In addition I enjoyed both the colour design and soundtrack of the film. The colours were very striking and the soundtrack also being memorable.
Despite the fact that this film was very dialogue heavy the story of the film was very powerful and enjoyable.
